Candy2

Candy is an old skinner who has one missing hand, and is working on the ranch when George and Lennie arrive. At first skeptical of George and Lennie's plan to buy a piece of land, he warms to it eventually and asks to join them. Candy owns an old dog in the beginning of the book, but it is put down by Carlson partway through. Near the end of the book, when he discovers Curley's wife dead in the barn, he cries, knowing that his plans with George and Lennie can never come to fruition. Afterwards he listens to George's advice and is willing to help him when he tells the people on the ranch that Curley's wife is dead. "The best laid schemes of mice and men, gang aft agley, an' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain, for promis'd joy!" - To a Mouse, by Robert Burns (1785)
